Jenna,

I am speechless. I found this blog because of your Freshly Pressed post about Philip Seymour Hoffman (which was a masterpiece, by the way, well done!), then realized you were the blogger my friend Kristen (Bye Bye Beer) wrote about, and now this... dealing with food issues, alongside alcoholism?!? It has made my day to find this blog, and I truly can't wait to be done writing this comment so I can read more. So wonderful to have found you, thanks for writing this!

Thanks, Paul! You are so right: self-improvement from a place of aggression is counterproductive! But staying with our experience, paying attention to our needs in the moment, allows us to make skillful decisions, changes, even improvements. Here's to a 2014 (and beyond) filled with compassion for ourselves and others!

Very well thought out and honestly, so true. Everything we dream about accomplishing or gravitating our own body images toward should always be about the "now" instead of the "anew." We shouldn't just make resolutions for the sake of killing ourselves for that perfect body or constantly slapping our wrists for indulging in those few slices of pizza which we promised we would give up in the New Year.
New Year's and everyday before and after are all part of the journey. I loved when you wrote, "Rather than hurling judgment at them, however, I will stealthily launch my compassion, empathy, and love" because it reflects what you said about thinking more with your heart instead of your mind. Truly, this is what we were meant to do here and if more people thought this way, there would be less frowning upon one another and more patience, kindness and gratitude for being here; together.
I enjoyed reading this and thank you for sharing.

Love this. The gyms and yoga studios are packed as we speak, with this unconscious and very conscious message being sent out that what we did last year was abominable, so what you going to do now, tubby? I mean, terrible sentiment, but there is that undercurrent that we *need* to get better, leaner, fitter, etc. And there is nothing inherintly wrong with that, when it comes from good and proper intentions. I too would like to improve my physique so that I can stay in shape to play with my kids and live longer. I want to be active and healthy. But it has to come from within.

What you say about coming from kindness and compassion is very well put. I would rather come from there with a bit of a spare tire on me, than pummeling myself into shape and not practising love and tolerance. Judgement of self and others is the underlying thing here, and I have to remember to be kind to self and to others.

Thank you for this and have a wonderful, peaceful 2014 :)

Blessings,
Paul
